Open Conversations and Building Resilience
Creating open and safe spaces for communication between adults and children is key. We are models for showing our ability to stay resilient, calm, and positive. It is likely that your child has had conversations at school about the current situation, and because of that, it will likely be reassuring to your child if you start a conversation that will clarify what they have heard, address possible fears, and allow for you to gauge their needs for information and reassurance.

Stay Positive
Doing our best to keep calm will put those around us at ease. Children receive messages from adults through both our words and our actions, and when we show anxiety and fear, children will likely feel nervous and afraid. Having calm, panic-free discussions can ease emotions and provide comfort. Check-in on how your child is feeling and acknowledge and address their worries rather than ignore them. “I know what you hear might be scary, but I am here for you and will do my best to keep you safe.” |
Keep Conversations Factual
Consider your child’s age and emotions to determine how to frame these conversations to ensure your child understands. Let them know that Japan and countries around the world are doing everything they can. It can also be comforting to be reminded that doctors are looking for ways to address the COVID-19, and highlight positive news as well. |
Identify Actions and Routines you can put in place to assert control where possible. Including your child on where to place the hand sanitizer in your home or what song you’ll sing while you wash your hands to make sure you scrub them long enough will give young people a sense of efficacy and influence.

Ask Curiosity Questions
Check-in to learn more about what your child is thinking, and address their worries using information from trusted sources. Let them know that not everything they hear from others is factual. Ask questions like “What did you hear? How did you feel when you heard about that? What facts do you know now? How likely is it that what you think might happen will actually happen?” |
Consider Media Consumption
- When online, consider the source, fact-check, and think before you share. Be mindful of how much information you are taking in, and minimize how often you are reading stories. Is what you are reading helpful? Anxiety-provoking? Does it contain both factual information and useful strategies? Try to keep a healthy balance (both online and offline) in your daily routines and lifestyle.
